Gavin Smith – Former Councillor
Dr Gavin Smith has served the Victorian community as an Intensive Care Paramedic with Ambulance Victoria (AV) since 1992, developing a passion for the evolution of pre-hospital emergency care through evidence-based practice, derived from clinical research. He serves as Associate Editor of the Australasian Journal of Paramedicine.
To date, his work has resulted in the development and implementation of prehospital Clinical Practice Guidelines in Victoria and Tasmania, including membership of the AV Medical Standards Committee and Prehospital and Emergency Medicine Trauma Group (Monash University). Seconded from 2014 to 2019 as Associate Professor of Paramedic Science at Victoria University (VU),Gavin Chaired the University’s Paramedic Research Group.
A keen traveller and history enthusiast, Gavin has lead two groups of paramedic students into Israel to work with Magen David Adom (the Israeli national ambulance service) in 2014 and 2016, as well as a posting to the Solomon Islands with Aspen Medical in 2010. Gavin served the membership and principles of the RSV faithfully during his period of service on Council, actively promoting the importance of science to the Victorian community.
Gavin co-chaired the Society’s Membership and Mentoring Committee with Dr Sophia Frentz from 2017 to 2021.
