Tom Beer – Past RSV Councillor (2017-18)

Dr Tom Beer AO is a Director of Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd, a road safety consulting company. He retired from CSIRO as Leader of the Climate Variability and Change Research Program, having earlier led the Biofuels Research Stream. He has worked successfully on scientific committees, both nationally and internationally. He served for 12 years on the Executive of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and was the first Australian to have been elected President of that body, which represents research geophysicists and geodesists in 68 countries.

He has been a member of CSPR, the chief advisory body of the International Council of Science, and also a member of the International Advisory Board for the Hungarian Water Science Program.

Tom was, in the past, Secretary of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society and a member of the Council of the Royal Society of Victoria in 2009. In 1995 he was Science Advisor to the Commonwealth Environment Protection Agency.

He is a Fellow of numerous scientific societies, including the Royal Society of Victoria. His awards include the Adam Hilger Prize, the CSIRO Chairman’s Medal, and a certificate of appreciation from the IPCC acknowledging his role in their receiving the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Tom was appointed as an Officer within the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO) in January 2022 “for distinguished service to science, particularly environmental risk, climate processes and sustainability, through research organisations.”
